Abstract

Reference is made to earlier determinations of the lattice parameters of the actinide tetrafluorides and some inconsistencies are pointed out. A comparison of the parameters recently obtained for CfF/sub 4/ with values for BkF/ sub 4/ indicated that the two sets of dimensions were not compatible. Deviation of the BkF/sub 4/ parameters from the trend shown for the tetrafluorides from Th to Cm was also noted. Subsequent calculations have provided a revised set of parameters for the tetrafluorides from Th to Bk, and these new values are reported and compared with earlier values. Details are given of the experimental work, and results are tabulated and discussed. The values reported are believed to be the best values at present for these compounds and provide a self- consistent set of dimensions for the series. The values of the three linear pararmeters converge towards a limit in the region of CfF/sub 4/, with the b/sub 0/ parameter showing the least change for element in the latter part of the series. It appears that it will not be possible to obtain experimental lattice parameters for the higher members of the actinide series at present, for reasons given. The data presented were obtained using themore » powder method, and single- crystal data are needed to verify the values reported. (UK)« less
