Abstract
Bogolyubov is rightfully regarded not only as a mathematician but also as a dynamist and theoretical physicist. However, in the first place, he was an outstanding mathematician who made fundamental con tributions to mathematics and its applications, starting from his young age. Numerous articles and even books are available about Bogolyubov’s life and works. However, they primarily cover his discoveries in nonlinear mechanics and theoretical physics, while only a brief account is given of his research on the cal culus of variations, computational mathematics, and applications. Bogolyubov’s major contributions to these areas are scarcely described even in large books concerning his accomplishments, such as A.N. Bogolyubov, N.N. Bogolyubov: Life and Works (Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, 1996); On the 100th Anniversary of Birthday of Academician Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov (1909–2009)
