Abstract

For many problems of the theory of thin elastic shells, membrane theory is either applicable or not applicable depending on the type of loading involved and on the nature of the boundary or edge conditions. Here we consider a special problem where the applicability of membrane theory depends on the geometry of the shell. We establish the range of validity of the membrane solution and also determine quantitative corrections to this solution.
