Abstract

This article is a reply to an article published in this same journal by David Moscoso-Sánchez, Álvaro Rodríguez-Díaz and Jesús Fernández-Gavira. The article in question addresses the relationship between sport for all and elitist sport in Spain from the transition back to democracy to the present day. Since I do not share the lines of argument expressed therein, I have written a reply based on the theory of sport as an open system in order to trace the evolution of and interactions between the different models of sport during the above-mentioned period. On the basis of my analysis, I demonstrate that it is not possible to assert that elitist sport has received preferential treatment in detriment to sport for all, as the target article claims. In the conclusion I refer to existing problems and propose possible solutions that need to be discussed in depth.
