Abstract

The article is devoted to the information of Arabic authors about the raid of the Normans on Andalusia in 844. One of the writers, al-Ya‘qubi, believed that the people that attacked Andalusia was ar-Rūs. This information caused polemics among historians. As disputes do not stop until now, the article discusses methodical approaches to the study of Arabic written sources. The terms “al-Madžhus”, “Sea al-Khazar”, names of settlements “Musanna” and “Abydos”, the Byzantine fema “Anatolicon”, city “Antalija”, country “al-Andalus” are investigated. The author concluded that Normans from Eastern Europe participated in the raid on Andalusia in 844. Arab writers had no information about military activities of ar-Rūs in Asia Minor in 844.
