Abstract

Approximate solutions to the second-order boundary-layer equations for incompressible flow are considered. A simplified form of the integral momentum equation for two-dimensional and axisymmetric flow is presented. Solutions to the problem of shear flow over a flat plate are obtained for five different polynomial approximations to the second-order boundary-layer velocity profile. It is found that the results obtained depend rather erratically on the polynomial degree employed.
