Abstract

Several alternative evolutionary pathways can be taken by a population subject to persistence high density conditions. The pattern of spatial and temporal predictability in habitat quality dictates whether selection will favor dispersability, diapause, competitive ability, or tolerance to crowded conditions. The latter may be indistinguishable from evolution of "Allee effects." There exist more alternatives than can be accommodated by the popular epithets "r" and "K" selection.
