Abstract

It has been previously shown that the giant resonance peak in the nuclear photoeffect can be understood as a superposition of the like particle- hole pairs, (pp) and (nn), in terms of the shell model. This formalism may be easily extended to an unfamiliar kind of collective state made by superimposing the unlike particle-hole pairs (pn). Discussed here is the possibility of observing such a collective state experimentally in the (p,n) reaction of a heavier nucleus. The model formulated is used to perform example calculations for lead. (H.D.R.)
