Abstract

The method adopted hitherto for measurement of the L2 subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields omega 2, f23, in the region Z>or=90 is shown to be extremely sensitive to the value assumed for the intensity ratio Lalpha /Lbeta of x-rays arising from L3 vacancies; a recent result for f23 is altered by a factor of 3 when the Hartree-Slater value of this ratio is used. More direct methods of studying L2 subshell yields are proposed.
