Abstract

The light-cone hamiltonian for abelian gauge theory in 3 + 1 dimensions is derived here in a manifestly gauge-independent way. Until now, light-cone quantization of field theory has been derived only in the light-cone gauge, without an explicit proof that the derived results are gauge-independent. In this paper it will be shown that the physical results obtained in the light-cone gauge are in fact identical with those obtained without gauge fixing; in particular the number of fundamental degrees of freedom is the same. Zero modes of the field operators must be retained also in the gauge-invariant formalism. It is shown how their presence modifies the standard form of the light-cone hamiltonian.
