Abstract

The plasma interaction of the dust coma of comet Shoemaker‐Levy 9 with the Jovian magnetosphere could result in the possible generation of a field‐aligned electric current system connecting the impinging dust cloud with the Jovian ionosphere. If the current flow is intense enough, transient auroral activity might be produced as a result. In this event, enhanced level of auroral and radio emissions would be expected an hour or so before the atmospheric impact.
