Abstract

Aim of review: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery is the main surgical method to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). But CABG included two surgical styles: and off-pump. Our article reviewed the literature and provided the new evidence to support and off-pump CABG for CAD patients.Method: We searched PUBMED with CABG, off-pump, on-pump and there were 87 clinical research articles in the past five years. We referenced 54 articles of them and also referenced to a free, on-line query system based on data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), which was available in the website of http://hcupnet.ahrq.gov.Recent findings: Off-pump CABG and CABG were the two main surgical methods to deal with CAD. On-pump CABG seemed popular in western country but not in many Asian countries. Off-pump CABG needed more surgical and anesthetic techniques but with shorter duration of graft patency. On-pump CABG needed cardiopulmonary bypass and may promote systemic inflammation but with longer duration of graft patency and better patient prognosis. High risk patients seemed to get benefits from CABG.Summary: Both and off-pump CABG have been proven as effective modalities for the treatment of CAD. The surgical methods should be chosen according to surgical and anesthetic skills, institutional expertise and individualized patient condition. Citation: Jie Sun, Yong G Peng.
