Abstract

This paper studies entropy-constrained deadzone quantizer design. It first shows that for symmetric uni-modal distributions, the entropy of the quantized output is a monotonic decreasing function of the outer bin-width of the deadzone quantizer. Based on this result, a fast algorithm is introduced for optimal entropy-constrained deadzone quantizer design. As experimental results, we give the optimal zero bin-width and outer bin-width for several generalized Gaussian distributions that are often used to model the AC coefficient distributions in image and video transform coding.
