Abstract
Abstract Niche breadth values of three hypothetical resource matrices have been computed by means of four different formulae eventually giving rise to contrasting results. Starting from these results some remarks upon the niche breadth and related concepts are made. It is stressed, on the one hand, that any mathematical approach to the measure of niche breadth taking into account community species composition is rather dubious and, on the other, that a rigorous methodology should be adopted in order to reach a realistic definition of the community concept.
