Abstract

T HE SECOND HALF of the nineteenth century has given a great deal of trouble to literary and art historians interested in establishing the norms for period styles, or a single period style. One of the most suggestive inquiries into the problem, Wylie Sypher's,' will enable us to focus on the question of mannerism vis-?-vis realism in Spanish drama of the time. But first a necessary discussion of what a period style is and what theories have been posited.
