Abstract

Walter T. Schmid offers first original interpretation of Laches since Hermann Bonitz in nineteenth century in only full-length commentary on Laches available in English.Schmid divides book into five main discussions: historical background of dialogue; relation of form and content in a Platonic dialogue and specific structural and aesthetic features of Laches; the first half of dialogue, which introduces characters and considers theme of education of young men; inquiry with Laches, which examines traditional Greek conception of military courage; and inquiry with Nicias in which two nontraditional conceptions of courage are mooted, one closely associated with sophistic movement in Athens, other with Socrates himself. Furnishing a detailed paragraph-by-paragraph reading that traces Socrates ongoing quest for virtue and wisdoma wisdom founded in action of a whole human lifeSchmid conclusively shows how and why Laches fills an important niche in Plato s moral theory.
