Abstract

We made experiments on the up and downstream MHD wakes of a non conducting cylinder translating with a velocity aligned to the magnetic field. Measurements of the magnetic field perturbation had been undertaken by means of magnetodiodes, which allow for local probing — a typical spacial resolution corresponds to 1,5 mm3. In the upstream wake, longitudinal and transverse measured profiles of the magnetic perturbation correlate well with the available theory taking into account the confinement. In the downstream wake, we had been able to sense the magnetic perturbation associated with the Karman vortex street. Joined velocity and magnetic field measurements had been made, providing phase and correlation relationship. The Strouhal number S has been found independent of Re in the range considered. It decreases as the interaction parameter N increases, which means a downstream shift of the unsteady separation point. The disappearance of the vortex street is characterized by a critical curve Re(M) (M = Hartmann number).KeywordsStrouhal NumberVortex StreetHartmann NumberCritical CurveMagnetic REYNOLDS NumberThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
