Abstract

Two line-transect estimators for population density of flushing animals, based on elliptic flushing curves, have recently been proposed, one by Burnham (1979, Biometrics 35, 587-595) and one by de Vries (1979, Biometrics 35, 743-748). It is now shown, under standard assumptions, that these estimators have substantially different asymptotic properties, with de Vries's estimator having the more favourable properties. The asymptotic distribution of this estimator is derived in detail.
