Abstract
Wide applicability of particulate traps on diesel powered vehicles, may be substantially aided by the design and development of improved regeneration control systems. A particularly promising class of on-line regenerable trap systems is supported by engine-based regeneration techniques; the most important of them seems to be engine exhaust throttling. In this paper, various control schemes for the above class of systems are briefly reviewed and a control system based on controlling engine air-to-fuel ratio during regeneration is recommended. Such a control system, that is yet to be developed, is expected to fully exploit the advantages of modern electronic diesel engine management systems, in the direction of supporting a reliable and cost effective trap system.
