Abstract

The aim of our paper to provide an on-line parameter identification algorithm to estimate the unknown parameters of the advection-dispersion (A-D) process used in river calamity models. To describe the evolution of an accidental spill into a river an approximate solution of the A-D equation has been used. To take into account the non-uniform velocity and discharge an integral transformation has been applied. The dependence of the dispersion coefficient on the velocity and the effect of the stagnant zones have also been taken into account. Computer simulatior showed good properties of the method and we give an example with real data obtained from die tracer experiment in the Rhine river.
