Abstract

This paper describes the on-line detection of spark locations in EDM processes. Each spark location can be obtained from the current ratio of branched electric wires which are connected to a tool electrode with an adequate mutual distance maintained. Thanks to this method, the mechanism of the straying movement of locally distributed sparks, which suggests an unpermissible are, is clarified. Moreover, since the variance of spark location is found to coincide well with the extent of discharge stability, monitoring of the variance may be useful for an adaptive control in EDM processes.
