Abstract

The microstructure of cemented carbides has been characterized in terms of area fraction Co phase, individual WC-grain size and contiguity between WC grains. The measurements have been performed on-line in a computer-controlled scanning electron microscope with a semiautomatic procedure. The desired level of confidence determines the required number of fields at a proper magnification. Typically, in a total analysis time of 2.5–5 hr, some 5 fields of view can be measured and an accuracy of 10% is obtained.
