Abstract
The heavy ion (HI) potential between deformed nuclei is improved by calculating the exchange part using finite-range nucleon-nucleon (NN) force instead of the zero-range pseudo-potential. We take the HI pair 238U-238U as an example to show the dependence of the HI potential on both the energy and the relative orientation of the two deformed nuclei. The effect of finite-range NN force is found to reduce the value of the HI exchange potential by about 30% at separation distance R = 0 and make it deeper starting from a region well before the surface region compared with the zero range force. The variations of the barrier height VB and its position RB due to the use of finite-range NN force are significant. These variations have a large effect if our procedure is applied to the diffusion process.
