Abstract

In this paper, interest is focused upon the two concepts of ‘method’ and ‘theory’, their contents, functions, and uses in recent Norwegian archaeology. It is argued that the distinction between inductive and deductive reasoning should not necessarily be decisive for our choice of research strategy. Finally, the concept of ‘understanding’ is introduced as more basic than simple explanation when studying cultural man, thus relating fundamental principles of archaeological reasoning to the mainstream of theoretical discussion within the humanities in general.
