Abstract

High penetration of renewable energy requires high voltage DC (HVDC) grids, and the growth of such systems is dependent on the readiness of reliable selective HVDC grid protection. Development of HVDC protection IEDs is ongoing both in academia and industry, driven in part by the prospective demands of future multi-terminal HVDC applications. There is, however, no consensus on how to test the functionality of HVDC protection IEDs. Successful operation of a future multivendor HVDC protection system requires functional specifications and common test procedures for protection system components, including protection IEDs. This paper discusses the challenges for evaluating the system-level functional performance of HVDC IEDs and provides directions for the future testing.
