Abstract

1. 1. The hemoglobin of the hedgehog ( Erinaceus roumanicus) as a representative of the insectivores was compared with that of primates. 2. 2. Hedgehog hemoglobin is less soluble, crystallizes well, and gives two components by separation on CM cellulose column. 3. 3. Tyrosyl-histidyl and tyrosyl-arginyl were found as C-terminal sequences of hedgehog hemoglobin. 4. 4. Four out of five arginine-containing peptides are similar to those of human and monkey ( Macacus rhesus) hemoglobins. 5. 5. One of the eight histidine-containing peptides present in the tryptic digest of human and monkey hemoglobins, corresponding to the β T 3 fragment was not found in the hedgehog hemoglobin.
