Abstract

We generalise the discussion of Pais and Treiman on neutral heavy leptons as a source for dimuons in two ways. First, we consider the effect allowing the neutrino emitted in the reaction L 0 → μ ++ μ −+ ν L 0 to have a finite mass. The result of Pais and Treiman is not changed enough to explain the experimental result. Secondly, we discuss another mechanism of dimuons in which a neutral lepton L 0 decays into a heavy lepton L ±: L 0 → L ±+ μ ±+ ν μ ∓ , L ∓ → ν L ∓ + μ ∓+ ν μ ± . We show that experimental results can be explained with a mass ratio m L−/ m L 0 of the order of 0.7, or m L+/ m L 0 < 0.45. A possible application to the production of heavy leptons in e +e − collisions is indicated.
