Abstract

The relationship between oesophagus and body length differed during post-embryonic development between Dorylaimids with a non-muscular anterior oesophagus and a posterior bulb (trichodorids ; longidorids) and those with a muscular anterior oesophagus (remaining dorylaimids, mononchids). Xiphinema species have a relatively longer oesophagus and longer stylet than Longidorus species, although both show the same, constant relation between oesophageal bulb/rest of oesophagus and between odontostyl/odontophore. During growth the body becomes relatively thinner, the width eventually decreasing to about 2-3% of the length.
