Abstract

For pt.I, see ibid., vol.24, p.1483 (1980). A series of experiments is described on grid excited ion-acoustic solitons. Particular attention is paid to ion bursts which are accelerated through the grid by the exciting potential and their role in launching the soliton. It is found that the soliton is launched a finite distance in front of the grid. A mechanism for excitation is proposed.
