On finding the recurrence‐time distributions of patterns in a sequence of Bernoulli trials

Abstract

Two approaches are given for obtaining the distribution of the number of trials until the first occurrence of patterns of successes and failures in a sequence of independent Bernoulli trials. One approach is extended to deal with events which occur when more than one pattern occurs.
