Abstract

The use of multimode optical fibers with an interferometer for measurement of small displacements is presented. In the experiment using an optical fiber 1 km in length, a displacement of 4 × 10−3 Å was measured. The measured value was limited by ambient noise in the laboratory. In a conceptual optical hydrophone design, such a displacement would correspond to a minimum detectable pressure of 65 dB//1μPa. In shot‐noise limited operation the minimum detectable pressure would be 44 dB//1μPa. This value is comparable with the value obtainable with good quality piezoelectric hydrophones.
