Abstract

This text was written by Paul Claudel in France in 1920 and published as the preface to an auction catalog for the sale of the costumes of Princesse Murat. The essay begins with a reflection on items of eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century furniture, and then moves on to women’s clothing, relating to the period of the Directory, the Restoration, King Louis-Philippe and the early twentieth century.
