Abstract

In this paper, three interpretations of the Neuber’s rule in terms of the total, strain and deviatoric energy densities formulations are presented and discussed. It is found that the proposed deviatoric energy interpretation of Neuber’s rule results in inelastic strains at notch-root that correlate fairly well with published experimental and FEA results. Attained correlations are between estimations obtained from the traditional Neuber’s rule and the equivalent strain energy density (ESED) method of Molski and Glinka. It can be noted, that the Neuber’s rule in terms of deviatoric energy has a consistent formulation independent of axial, shear or multiaxial state of stress.
