Abstract

AbstractThe method of moments has been used for a long time to describe the chain length averages of polymers made via different mechanism. This article describes a mathematical analysis method to derive the simplest general expression for the moments of the chain length distribution of linear polyolefins made with single‐site‐type coordination catalysts. It also shows how to use this general solution for polyolefins made with multiple‐site‐type coordination catalysts. More importantly, this article advocates the use of elegant solutions in polymerization reaction engineering, which are deceivingly simple mathematical equations that capture the most essential information about complex polymerization systems. Elegant solutions shine more light on the phenomena they are modeling than more complex and computational demanding methods.
