Abstract

The spectral functions rho (k2) to order e2 in quantum electrodynamics (QED) for an arbitrary space of dimension 2L are derived and are used to calculate the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the vector current commutators in a closed form for intermediate fermion states of arbitrary mass. A particularly difficult integral in the VEV including the mass term is evaluated as a Meijer G function. Using these results the problem of equal-time current-current commutators (Schwinger terms) is approached covariantly, thereby resolving some renormalisation ambiguities, and also the well known ambiguities attendant on any naive use of the T product at equal times.
