Abstract

AbstractThirty nine taxa of Class Chlorophyceae (Order Zygnematales, Family Desmidiaceae) collected from different aquatic habitats of Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Mandi districts of Himachal Pradesh, India have been described. These taxa belong to six genera viz. Closterium Nitzsch (three species, two varieties), Pleurotaenium Nägeli (two spp.), Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs (18 spp., ten var.), Micrasterias C.Agardh (one sp.), Spondylosium Bréb. (one sp.) and Euastrum Ehrenb. (one sp., one var.). 38 taxa are being reported for the first time from the state of Himachal Pradesh out of which 28 taxa are of Cosmarium indicating that water bodies of Southern Himachal Pradesh are clean (oligotrophic) and need to protect. Overall presence of desmids reveals the oligotrophic nature of water bodies. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
