Abstract
A comprehensive scheme is presented for decentralized control and estimation of large-scale systems which are composed of a number of overlapping subsystems. By ignoring the interconnections, local feedback controls are chosen to optimize each decoupled subsystem separately. Conditions are provided to establish compatibility of the local independent control strategies and achieve stability of the overall interconnected system. If the entire state of the overall system is not available for control, the scheme can be used to build low-order estimators for each individual subsystem, the union of which constitutes an estimator for the overall system. Besides computational simplifications, the scheme is attractive for its structural simplicity and the fact that it produces dynamically reliable regulators, which are useful in designs of simple and complex systems alike.
