Abstract

Todd Field has captivated audiences with psychologically complex characters and richly layered screenplays. Sixteen years after his second film, Little Children (2006), he made an astonishing return to the silver screen with TÁR (2022), a psychological drama about the rise and fall of world-renowned conductor Lydia Tár, played by Cate Blanchett. In this interview, Field shares his creative writing process and what advice was given to him by his father-in-law, legendary screenwriter and Academy Award-winner Bo Goldman. Additionally, Field discusses extraordinary cinematic influences of the 1970s, watching The French Connection (1971) with Paul Thomas Anderson and his outlook on the future.
