Abstract
Results of studying the plasma-formation dynamics of the capacitive rf discharge in inert gases and in the air at atmospheric pressure are presented. Measurements have been conducted using an original technique for determining the sizes of luminous objects with an emission-line spectrum. The conditions for a transition from a torch discharge to a filamentary one are found. A qualitative model of the formation of a filament discharge taking into account its inherent electromagnetic field is offered.
