Abstract

In some latest cars equipped with diesel engines, particulate filter is used to reduce the emission of diesel particulates (black exhaust fumes). This paper intends to develop a model based algorithm for fault detection in the mechanical part of a wallflow monolith diesel particulate filter. The algorithm is based on a zero-dimensional nonlinear dynamic mathematical model associated with an adaptive observer. Fault detection is performed through the estimation of a coefficient that plays the role of a malfunction indicator.
