Abstract

Abstract These are comments on Russell Berman's “Opposition to Rearmament and West German Culture.” Seyla Benhabib offers a different perspective on the West German peace movement, responding along the way to a number of Russell's judgments, and Jean Cohen and Andrew Arato present yet another view. This might give the impression that there are some differences among Telos editors. Good: there are. I want here to take up only some methodological matters raised by Russell's remarks, matters of approaching (or not approaching) contemporary social movements, particularly in the West. In the Telos scene his positions are symptomatic of some significant problems.
