Abstract

Problems involving the reliability of determination of the expanse of a stratum prone to slump-type settlement, and the computed slump-type settlement of soils due to their own weight, as well as compressible zones and additional settlements of soils underlying a stratum prone to slump-type settlement, which were previously disregarded during surveys, design, and construction, are addressed on the basis of analysis of published studies devoted to results of the wetting of experimental and industrial pits.
