Abstract

The goal of the paper is to present and discuss approaches for the design of flexible manufacturing systems on different levels. In particular the Leuven development proposal for manufacturing holons will be compared to the AWIC design proposal for multi-agent systems. Eventually the flexibility of the AWIC-method will be demonstrated by revisiting two agent based solutions of the job shop scheduling problem as proposed by Rozenberg and Sycara.
