Abstract

Our first article provided you with general information about the Joint Commission's home care survey process. We continue with what happens immediately after the survey is completed. Your home care organization's accreditation decision is based on how well it complies with the standards detailed in Volume I of the 1995 Accreditation Manual for Home Care (AMHC). When the Joint Commission completes a survey, your home care organization's standard-level scores are translated into a single accreditation decision. The Joint Commission's process for translating scores into an accreditation decision involves the use of aggregation and decision rules. These rules and the processes in which they operate were designed to ensure that accreditation decisions are fair, reliable, and consistent across organizations. This article explains how the aggregation rules and decision rules work. This explanation should enable you to use these rules with the standards and scoring guidelines to improve your organization's performance and prepare for a survey and follow-up monitoring.
