Abstract

Abstract A microthallus of the brown alga Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngb.) Link bearing unilocular sporangia and young upright plants, and in a single instance also a few plurilocular sporangia, was observed in nature in Denmark. On the basis of the occurrence of unilocular sporangia, this microthallus is presumed to be diploid, and the young upright plants are presumed to develop in nature into diploid Scytosiphon plants with plurilocular sporangia. The supposition that this microthallus is a sporophyte leads to a consideration that the Danish Scytosiphon lomentaria may follow a different life cycle than that of the Japanese plant, investigated by Nakamura and Tatewaki, and thus the two plants may not be conspecific. The sporangia-bearing plant of Microspongium gelatinosum Reinke possibly is the sporophyte of the Danish Scytosiphon lomentaria.
