Abstract

Finite volume effects on the mass spectrum of massive quantum field theories (including QCD) are shown to be related to forward scattering amplitudes of the infinite volume theory. Using theoretical and experimental information on the latter, the finite size effects can be estimated. For the pion and the nucleon they are found to be small, provided mπL ≥ 1 (mπ: pion mass, L: box size).
