Abstract
In simple habitats the population of field voles ( microtus agrestis) exhibits cyclical behaviour, the population size oscillating with a period of four years approximately. We suggest a simple model to describe these variations. A formal perturbation analysis of the resulting nonlinear delay differential equation yields results in agreement with the observations.
