Abstract

A cis neurosporene, termed neo P, occurs in the ripe berries of Pyracantha angustifolia Schneid. and is possibly identical with the tomato pigments, “unidentified pigment I,” “poly cis-Ψ-carotene,” and “protetrahydrolycopene.” The spectral properties of neo P are described and data are presented in favor of its interpretation as a poly(unhindered)- cis-neurosporene. The in vitro stereoisomerization of all- trans-neurosporene yields six new cis forms none of which is identical with neo P ex Pyracantha.
