Abstract

Layout Optimization is a vital and vibrant research area in engineering. This work concerns the development of a biologically inspired methodology to advance concurrent layout optimization and sub-system placement for multi-disciplinary design optimization. The methodology is based on a cellular division model for developing the design layout over a multiply-connected domain. The layout thus generated is then evolved using a genetic algorithm. The methodology is demonstrated for the design of a structural panel from a satellite at idealized launching conditions. The results show the suitability of the methodology for MDO applications where sub-system placement is an essential part of the design.
