Abstract

The universal equation of state of Th based on the recent high pressure X‐ray diffraction measurements displays a nonlinear behaviour which is interpreted from band structure calculations as due to inter band spd → f electron transfer. However, the available shock wave measurements (up to 137 GPa) show the linear Us−Up relation. We have compared the two sets of data and observe that the 300 K isotherm reduced from the shock Hugoniot agrees very well with the static measurements. This implies that the 5f band also gets occupied in Th under shock compression. This also suggests that the linear Us−Up relation contains information about an electronic transition. This has been further confirmed by analysis of static and shock data on Uranium.
